En 1950, durante el ataque a Hiroshima, vivió una niña japonesa que sufría de una extraña enfermedad. Sadako, que así se llamaba la niña, estaba convencida de que si lograba hacer 1000 grullas de papel, se le concedería cualquier cosa a cambio. Ella deseó no sólo curarse, sino también que todo el mundo pudiera vivir en paz y no existieran más guerras.

Sadako no logró terminar las 1000 grullas, se detuvo antes de terminar la número 645. Después de su muerte, las grullas de origami se convirtieron en un símbolo de salud, bienestar, felicidad y prosperidad, pero sobre todo de transformación y plenitud.
